Frequently asked questions

Which PHP version should I use?

I currently recommend PHP 8.2 or 8.3. These versions offer the best performance, modern language features such as Named Arguments and Enums, as well as active security support. Older versions like PHP 7.4 or 8.0 are already end-of-life.

Which PHP framework do you recommend?

That depends on the project. For fast, lean applications I use CodeIgniter 4. For more complex projects with many requirements Laravel is ideal. I use Symfony for enterprise applications requiring long-term maintenance.

Is PHP still up-to-date or should I switch to Node.js?

PHP is absolutely up-to-date. Over 75% of all websites use PHP, including Facebook, Wikipedia and WordPress. Modern PHP versions are performant and type-safe. Node.js is interesting for real-time applications, but for classic web applications PHP is often the better choice.

Can you modernise existing PHP code?

Yes, I take over and modernise legacy PHP code. This includes updates to current PHP versions, refactoring to object-oriented code, introduction of Composer for dependencies and implementation of automated tests.

How do you secure PHP applications?

Security is built into every line of code: prepared statements against SQL injection, output escaping against XSS, CSRF tokens, secure session handling and Content Security Policy. I use tools like PHPStan for static analysis.
